IPC Print Services Adds A New Press
Installation is complete on IPC Print Services' newest press, the Harris M1000A2; an updated version of the M1000A
installed in 2000. Each of the Harris presses has 10 color units, a 22 " cutoff and 38' width capacity, and can
produce 32 standard-size (8 " x 10.78') pages with up to five colors per side. The differences in the M1000A2 come
in the technological improvements both inside and that support the press.
For instance, the new press:
-
Is far faster. With an top end run speed of 43,000 impressions per hour, the M1000A2 can run nearly twice the
number of per-hour impressions compared to the original M1000A.
-
Maintains color consistency. With a closed loop color control system, the new press self monitors the color it
produces. The constant feedback it provides allows for better color control and maintenance, as well as minimized
waste.
-
Answers industry demands. Running faster and better means better customer service. 'The quality expectations of
our market are increasing. This press is able to respond to that,' Production Control Manager Bill Risto explained.
'Our work load was such that we were maxed out on what we could produce each week. Because it is the same size as
the original press, we can move one job to another press. They're interchangeable, making our services more
flexible.'
'It's like a HUMMER compared to a Ford Ranger,' Director of Print Operations Dan Drake explained. 'The capabilities
are the same, but the M1000A2 has much more beef to it. It has opened the constraints in large format color
printing to better meet the needs of our customers.'
IPC currently prints and distributes more than 400 magazines and journals, most publishing monthly. Installation of
the M1000A2 was completed in October. It will be run by a five-person crew on four 12-hour shifts, seven days a
week.
